Uganda's Universiade Games team cash strapped

Team Uganda is financially constrained ahead of the 2019 Universiade Games set for 3-14 July in Naples, Italy.

"The Association of Uganda University Sports (AUUS) is still struggling to raise money for feeding and accommodation. Of the sh438m, AUUS has managed to outsource sh142m. The association needs sh296m to ensure that the team travels to Naples on Tuesday next week," said Vincent Kisenyi team leader of Uganda.

The Summer Universiade is an international university sports and cultural event that is staged every two years in a different city. These games draw many thousands of student-athletes together to compete, making it one of the largest multi-sport events in the world.

A number of institutions including UCU, Makerere University, Ndejje, Bugema and Kyambogo will contribute students to the Universiade Games. They will compete in athletics, swimming and lawn tennis.

Uganda's contingent will have 42 people including Paul Mark Kayongo (Ndejje University) as head of delegation, Faustino Kiwa (Bugema University) as the athletics coach and Thomas Tamale (Makerere University) as the swimming coach.

Summer Universiade incorporates education and cultural aspects, encouraging student-athletes from around the world to combine high sports performance with their intellectual pursuits.

The twelve-day Summer Universiade competition programme includes fifteen compulsory sports.

To stay on the forefront of sports development and innovation, organisers may also include up to three optional sports from the FISU recognised sports list and World University Championships programme into their event.
