Ebola: US pledges to support Uganda fight the virus

KAMPALA - The United States has pledged to support the Uganda government which is facing a new outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus.

In a statement released by its embassy in Uganda, the US said it has strong confidence in the Ugandan government ability to respond to the outbreak but is open to giving a hand in coordination with partners to help stem further spread of the disease.

"The US government has invested heavily in Uganda's preparations to manage Ebola through both technical and financial assistance, and we will continue to provide assistance to prevent the spread of the disease," read the statement.

The development comes as the Government declared three cases of Ebola in the western Ugandan district of Kasese, at the Uganda - Congo border.

The Uganda Red Cross Society has joined the team from the Ministry of Health as the country pushes to contain the virus.

Congo, where the outbreak is believed to have originated, has recorded over 2000 cases of the virus and Uganda has been on high alert.
