The gun is said to have had 30 rounds of ammunition at the time it was stolen

Police on the wee hours of Monday morning managed to kill an unidentified suspected robber and recovered a gun which they say was stolen from one of its officers.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said the suspect was pursued following alerts from residents in Ntinda where he had allegedly shot a security guard at Sals Hotel along Kiwatule Road.

"He tried to access the hotel and a guard tried to stop him. We suspect he wanted to rob. But in the scuffle; he shot the guard dead as he tried to stop him. Residents and hotel employees immediately alerted the Police and our officers from Kira and Jinja Road Police stations mounted a search," he noted.

Owoyesigyire added that the assailant was later tracked to Kyambogo where he was killed in a gunfight. Police recovered the gun with nine rounds of ammunition.

Initial Police investigations indicate that this was the same gun which was stolen from officer Yakuti Mbogo, attached to VIPPU while he was guarding the Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) offices at the beginning of May.

The gun is said to have had 30 rounds of ammunition at the time it was stolen.

Owoyegyire explained that Mbogo was attacked by unknown men and stabbed before the gun was taken.

He said that both bodies of the guard and the assailant are at Mulago Hospital as Police investigate whether there were accomplices.

"We are also waiting for our officer to recover for questioning as we try to get the particulars of the assailant," Owoyesigyire added.
