On her sick bed, Bafumba said she had briefly stayed back in the classroom as her colleagues picked the firewood. The teacher then arrived and asked why she was so "stubborn."

"As I fidgeted for an appropriate answer, he picked a piece of split firewood and hit my back hard. It broke into two and I felt like I had been cut by a panga. I collapsed and blacked out." she said.

The incident happened last Thursday shortly after the morning assembly, sending pupils and teaching staff into panic.

The staff rushed her to a nearby clinic and later to Kamuli general hospital for further treatment.

Medical Report

The medical superintendent of Kamuli general hospital, Dr. Zaidi Atuma confirmed Bafumba's admission, adding that the x-ray report indicated that she sustained both a fractured and dislocated spine.

"We're keenly observing her condition and once it worsens, we shall refer her to bone specialists in Mulago-Kampala." Atuma said.

The victim's mother, Sarah Nabirye said they opened up an assault case at Nakiwuulo Police Station however, the case was halted after the headmaster and Grace Waiswa accepted to pay all the medical obligations until the pupil recovers.

"We're in touch with the family and they're cooperative." Waiswa said, adding that among the bills they have so far cleared include x-ray, medicine and meals.

Joyce Nalongo, the victim's grandmother wondered why the teacher he knew is a humble, born again Christian went emotional to that extent.

"It must have been a satanic instinct, otherwise the man has been so good." Nalongo said.

The Police Spokesperson for Busoga North, Michael Kasadha, said they're aware of the assault, but declined to detail owing to the agreement between the two parties.

"May be when the offenders breach the agreement, otherwise we have put the arrest and investigations on hold." Kasadha said.
