Nkumba narrowly defeat Egyptian giants El Shams

Mar 18, 2019

In their opening match on Saturday, they failed to field nine players as required by the tournament rules.

Nkumba University Volleyball Club (NUVC) put the stress of their walkover against Ivorian outfit Asec behind them to narrowly defeat Egyptian giants El Shams 3-2 (17-25, 25-21, 25-22, 11-25, 15-8) at the Africa Club Championships.

In their opening match on Saturday, they failed to field nine players as required by the tournament rules. This was caused by a flight delay, so four of their players could not join up in time due to a connection mishaps by Ethiopian Airways.

Nkumba went on to play the match where they comprehensively defeated Asec 3-0 but the points, unfortunately, went to Asec.

The match against opponents as tough as El Shams was a mere formality but instead, Tonny Lakony's side showcased their strong points.

"This win was very important first because it keeps us in the hunt for the quarterfinals but also we have beaten the second biggest team in Egypt in a great performance on the back of yesterday's mishap, it's refreshing," Lakony told New Vision.

They thought they had lost their chance to make it to the quarterfinals because of the sheer magnitude of the opponent El Shams from Egypt but they instead put up a good fight.

Today, they have another tricky outing against Kenyan giants Prisons where they hope to continue the good work.

"They will be tough as you can imagine and very experienced as well. They are the best team in Kenya as well. We are relishing the challenge and hope we can improve our performance from today, which we must to get a result," Lakony said.
