Mar 12, 2019

Kasozi’s first attempt was in 2014, since then, no Uganda golfer has ever made any money from this event.

Uganda professional golfer Phillip Kasozi is among the 156 players who will compete in the 2019 Magical Kenya Open Golf Championship that starts at the Karen Golf and Country Club in Nairobi on Wednesday.

This will be Kasozi's second attempt at trying to making the cut in the lucrative championship which has a prize fund of over sh1b. Kasozi's first attempt was in 2014, since then, no Uganda golfer has ever made any money from this event.

Following his successful participation in the Kenya Safari Tour, Kasozi was the only Ugandan that made the cut alongside 12 Kenyan professionals and six elite amateur golfers.

Since August 2018, Kasozi has participated in five Safari Tour events and at each of these legs, the golf professionals have been awarded points based on their performance.

Kasozi will take on the rest of the world alongside Kenya's Greg Snow, Dismas Indiza, David Opati, Rizwan Charania, David Wakhu and Tony Omuli. The rest are C.J. Wangai, Nelson Simwa, Simon Ngige, Erick Ooko, and Justus Madoya.

Besides Kenya, there will be close to 30 other countries from around the world that will be represented at the annual championship.

The African golfers will fight it out against 15-time European Tour Champion, and immediate former Ryder Cup Captain, Thomas Bjorn; 2016 winner, Sebastian Soderberg; and 2015 winner, Haydn Porteous among other players.

Since it began in 1967, the Kenya Open Golf Championship has transformed into an international sporting event of note that has attracted hundreds of international golf players over the years - most of whom are from Kenya's top tourism source markets in Europe such as the United Kingdom.
