WOMEN'S DAY

SOROTI- Women employees of Etop radio and Etop newspaper have relived their male counterparts by taking on the duties of broadcasting and reporting as they mark the International Women Day today.

It was also a surprise to the listeners in Teso region to be woken up Friday morning to only female voices, which is unusual with Etop radio.

When Etop men arrived at office, they found out that most of their roles were taken up by women living them with no option but to prepare and serve them tea.

"It feels good to have staff that respect women. How I wish all days should be women's day," said excited Stella Ipas, the news editor Etop radio as she received her tea from Felix Osujo, Etop senior reporter.

The management resolved that women take the lead in all radio programmes as men take a back seat.

"This is a demonstration of women empowerment. We are empowered and we can work without any help from men," said Elizabeth Akiror, the station programmes manager.

Listeners were excited with the change in programming and some drove in to deliver their gifts to smartly dressed ladies.

One listener delivered a batch of bananas to morning crew presenter, Stella Akia and Rebecca Amongin and commended Etop management for its innovation.

Later in the day the Etop women football team will be taking on Soroti Market vendors in a friendly match at Soroti sports ground.

Etop radio is one of the six radio stationed owned by Vision Group. Since its inception ten years ago, Etop radio has remained eastern Uganda's number one station while Etop newspaper has remains the only number one vernacular weekly newspaper.
