Mercy Corps has been present in Uganda since 2006, focusing its interventions on economic and agricultural development, maternal child health and nutrition, governance, confl ict management and humanitarian response. Mercy Corps' MSD programmes often focus on farming as a business and benefi ciaries as producers. Recognizing that not all benefi ciaries wish to become producers, additional interventions focus on microenterprise development.

The supporting microenterprise strengthening (SMS) project, focuses on supporting micro-entrepreneurs both on-farm and off -farm to improve their businesses. specifi cally, the project will work with micro-entrepreneurs, through capacity building and through matched grant support to prospective microenterprises.

Designing and implementing a specialized microenterprise project with a specialized team would promise to ensure the success of the SMS project and its ability to build from the increased market supply and demand developed by other Mercy Corps agricultural and livestock MSD programmes.
