Church launches drive against domestic violence

IGANGA - Central Busoga diocese has kicked off a campaign aimed at eradicating domestic violence.

The  Central Busoga diocese bishop, Patrick Wakula, said the campaign involves sensitising married couples about the need to give respect to each other besides avoiding temptations that can lead to quarrels or fights in homesteads.

Wakula said the clergy has been instructed to always spare some time during Sunday church service to preach to married couples about the dangers of engaging in domestic violence.

He said domestic violence in homesteads has contributed to an increase in the number of street children on top of unnecessary fights and even deaths in some cases.

"Some of the children feel they are not safe at home and end up running away to streets so that they can survive on their own "he said

Wakula, while commenting on the forthcoming Valentines Day, said Christians were free to celebrate it as long as they are with their loved ones.

"We don't expect a Christian to grab someone's daughter and make her drunk so that he does anything evil afterwards," he said

He urged Christians to spend Valentines Day with their loved ones avoid being tempted to do evil.

The LC 5 chairman Iganga, Patrick Kayemba hailed the Church for spearheading the fight against domestic violence.

He said the campaign comes at a time when several cases of domestic violence have been reported in most homesteads leading to divorce in several cases.

Majority of the cases are as a result of infidelity allegations.
