  UGANDA PREMIER LEAGUE: Police beat Express 2-0


Johnson Odong sealed victory for Police FC with a strike in stoppage time as the Cops beat Express FC on their turf on Monday.

Juma Balunya had put the visitors in front 31 minutes into the opening half, and when Kefa Kisala's men failed to provide a response, they were punished further six minutes after the normal 90 at Mutesa II Stadium in Wankulukuku.

The result means Police climb three places up to seventh place while the Red Eagles slide one place to 10th.

  Chinese New Year's Eve

Today is the People's Republic of China's New Year's Eve .

Celebrations for the New Year celebrations have been punctuated with dancing and feasting, as people congratulate themselves and wish each other the best of the coming year. The Chinese New Year starts on Tuesday, with 2019 observed, according to the Chinese zodiac calendar, as the year of the pig.

In China, a pig is a symbol of good fortune.

 

The New Year festival, festival, usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China and is one of several Lunar New Years in Asia, is believed to carry with it new ideas and dreams.

Here in Uganda, performers are putting up colorful performances, leaving the audiences impressed with their skills.

Traditionally, the Chinese New Year festival is seen as a happy occasion for family members to get together, to bid farewell to the past and to embrace the future.

  UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL LEAGUE: MUK edge KIU


New Vision's Badru Katumba:

After missing out on the 7th edition of the University League over disciplinary issues, Makerere University return this year like a wounded predator.

On Monday, they faced Kampala International University in the playoffs, with qualification for the group stage on their minds.

 

Today's was the first of two legs - and the intensity of the day's heat was replicated on the pitch in a ping-pong affair. Traffic was two-way in a game keenly watched by effervescent crowds.

As the match looked destined for a nil-nil draw, Makerere's John Paul Bonga found the breathrough three minutes before time with a tapped in finish to send the home fans into celebrations. That, there, put Makerere one step closer to progressing to the group stage.

The return leg will be played next week at KIU.

 

 On Tuesday, Kabale University host Nkumba University in Kabale.

UPDF seizes guns from Turkana herders

Water shortage and severe drought in some parts of north-western Kenya have seen Turkana pastoralists cross to Uganda in search of water and pasture for their herd.

This has resulted into an intensified operation along the Uganda-Kenya border by the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF), where 12 guns have been recovered from the pastoralists.

The UPDF third Division spokesperson, Capt. Isaac Oware, has confirmed recovery of the guns, saying the army has intensified the operation towards eradication of illegal guns.

"We have the rifles and unspecified number of ammunitions," he says.

Malnutrition in all its forms, including undernutrition and obesity, accounts for 19 percent of ill-health and premature death globally - by far the largest cause. Excess body weight affects 2 billion people worldwide and 2 billion people are undernourished including micronutrient deficiencies.

  HPV vaccine is safe, says cancer agency


"Unfounded rumours" causing people to spurn the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine was preventing the elimination of cervical cancer, which kills more than 300,000 women every year, health authorities said Monday.

To mark World Cancer Day 2019, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) issued a statement in which it "unequivocally confirms the efficacy and safety of HPV vaccination".

 

"Unfounded rumours about HPV vaccines continue to unnecessarily delay or impede the scaling up of the vaccination, which is so urgently needed to prevent cervical cancer," said IARC director Elisabete Weiderpass.

Spread mainly through sex, the human papillomavirus causes most cases of cervical cancer, which claims the life of a woman somewhere in the world every two minutes.

It is the fourth most deadly cancer for women.

Amama Mbabazi appears before COSASE

 

Former Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi is appearing before Parliament's Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) as investigations into banks' closure continues. Mbabazi is a shareholder of one of the defunct banks - National Bank of Commerce.

The committee is chaired by Abdu Katuntu, the MP for Bugweri County.

COSASE has been probing Bank of Uganda following a special audit report on the closure of several commercial banks in the country. They include Teefe Bank (1993), International Credit Bank Ltd (1998), Greenland Bank (1999), Co-operative Bank (1999), National Bank of Commerce (2012), Global Trust Bank (2014) and more recently Crane Bank Ltd.

Dr. Ambrose Egona, the director general of NARO, has explained the different technologies they are introducing to improve agricultural practices in the country.

These are the Vikings Jersey breed from Denmark.

 

They have high milk yields, are heat-tolerant, eat less and are disease-resistant, according to Dr. Yona Baguma, the deputy director general of research at the National Agricultural Research Organisation (NARO).

Researchers are currently collecting embryos so they can roll out to the whole country. Each cow was bought at 500$ (about sh1.8m).

Kadaga then visited the national livestock research institute where a new tick vaccine is being tested on both local and foreign breeds. Agriculture minister Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja is also on the tour.

Dr. Mugerwa Swidiq, the director of research at the institute, says that by June, the evaluation will be done.

 

And if successful, Uganda will be able to take on the world market, which will contribute to foreign exchange. He says they are also developing vaccines for the African swine fever.

Speaking of which, Kadaga was in Lira district at the weekend - in the northern part of the country. There, she attended a thanksgiving ceremony for MP Charles Angiro Gutomoi of Erute North County, who was involved in a nasty car crash in Kiryandongo in May last year.

She was in the company of other MPs, particularly from the Lango Parliamentary Association. The prayers were led by the Bishop of Lango Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Alfred Olwa.

  World Cancer Day - The common cancers


The executive director of the Uganda Cancer Institute, Dr. Jackson Orem, says that 30% to 40% of cancers in Uganda are infection-related. At a press conference last week, he broke down the commonest cancers by gender.

 

He said the commonest cancers in women are: cervical cancer, breast cancer, Kaposi Sarcoma, cancer of the stomach, lymphoma and liver cancer.

And in men, it is prostate cancer, Kaposi Sarcoma, cancer of oesophagus, liver cancer and lymphoma.

In children, the common cancers are leukaemia (cancer of the blood), Burkitt Lymphoma, cancer of the kidney and cancer of bones and muscle.

  World Cancer Day - Five lifestyle changes


As part of the activities to mark World Cancer Day (February 4), the health state minister for primary health care, Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, addressed the public on cancer prevention, detection and treatment measures.

At a press conference on Friday, she revealed that last year, there were 32,617 new cancer cases and 21,829 cancer deaths in Uganda.

So how can you prevent cancer? The minister offered five "simple lifestyle changes".

1. Stop consumption of tobacco

2. Limit harmful consumption of alcohol

3. Engage in physical activity for at least 30 mins a day

4. Eat healthy foods

5. Vaccinate yourself against Hepatitis B and HPV

This year, the World Cancer Day is being held under the theme "I am, I will". Today, it will be marked with Zumba dance and free cancer screening and care services.

  Handling Nkata's situation


The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has reached out to FIFA just days after Kakamega Homeboyz sacked coach Paul Nkata over alleged match-fixing claims.

The federation boss Nick Mwendwa says they have written to the world governing body seeking help on how to handle the situation and also requesting that the Ugandan coach is suspended pending investigations on the same.

"As a federation, we must move quickly and get the truth on the allegations and that is the reason why we have written to Fifa. We want Fifa to guide us on how to handle the situation but most importantly, we want Fifa to suspend Nkata, who allegedly, is the main man in the scam.
