Placentas dumped in the open at Kibuku health facility

KIBUKU - The health facility in Kibuku district is grappling with poor hygiene to the extent that placentas are dumped in open places after women give birth.

After the New Vision reporter spotted a placenta next to the kitchen, some health workers feigned ignorance, saying they would find out if it is true.

"I will check," Samuel Masimo Mugulusi, a health official said.

This was during the cleaning exercise by the youth trained by Civil Society Budget Advocacy Group who offered to clean the general ward and the surrounding of Kibuku Health Centre IV in Kibuku district.

They also found an open hole near the kitchen and staff quarters, where placentas are dumped and they emitted a bad smell in the area.
 
Hawa Nakyeya, a midwife said the metallic cover/lid was stolen by scraps sellers and the health facility doesn't have money to purchase another and pay the welder.

As if that was not enough, the water reservoir was also poorly maintained as it breeds mosquitoes and empty bottles have been dumped in it, making the whole area filthy.

Mugulusi said the facility attends to over 2,000 patients a month and it has only one ward shared by women and male patients as well as children.

He appealed to government to build more wards to cater for different sexes.
