Police in Ibanda is investigating circumstances under which the LC1 chairperson of Nyatsimbo A village, Ishongororo town council in Ibanda district reportedly killed his wife and later committed suicide by drinking poison.
Frank Tubesigwa, 58, on Tuesday night allegedly stabbed his wife Rosette Mpumwire, 32, following a heated argument.
The two had lived together for 16 years and had six children. It is alleged that Tubesigwa accused Mpumwire of infidelity and financial indiscipline.
The Ibanda district Police commander Emily Angomoku while at the scene of the incident condemned the act and warned couples against domestic violence which she said still ranks high in the district.
Jackson Sande the LC1 chairperson of the neighbouring Karo Karungi village and a close friend to Tubesigwa, said he had tried to mediate and end the squabbles between the couple but he was not successful.
The Ibanda Woman Member of Parliament, Jovrine Kaliisa, expressed concern over the occurrence, saying domestic violence in the district needs concerted efforts because it has hindered family development in the district.
