Kasirye looking forward to busy year with Olympics loomimg

“I know it is going to be a tough year but I will try to balance both sports and education"

The 2018 Uganda Sport Press Association (USPA) badminton male player of the year, Brian Kasirye, is expected to experience a much tougher year in 2019.

The 17-yr-old has big ambitions of making it to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan that speculates would be a turning point to his badminton career.

But the journey to Tokyo begins with the All Africa Games scheduled for August in Morocco, where Kasirye is certain he will raise the required points to reach the qualification mark.

However, this year, the Kakungulu Memorial student is expected to write his UACE exams that the he also considers a vital part of his career.

"I know it is going to be a tough year but I will try to balance both sports and education because they are all vital to my life," he stated.

Kasirye made the remarks on Monday while presenting medals won at the Africa Schools Championship to National Council of Sports' David Katende at Lugogo.

Kasirye beat Nigeria's Christopher Daniels 2-0 in the men's singles final in Accra, Ghana to bag Uganda's only gold medal at the week-long event that was held in December.

Kasirye who represented Kakungulu Memorial together with teammates Muzafaru Lubega and Paul Makande and colleagues from Mbogo High; Hussina Kobugabe, Tracy Naluwooza and Sharifah Wanyama, returned with a gold medal and seven bronze medals.

Kakungulu Memorial and Mbogo High went into the annual competition as the defending champions having won the 2017 edition hosted at Lugogo in Kampala.

Meanwhile, champions Nigeria won 11 medals, consisting of four golds, four silvers and three bronze medals.
