Baby hospitalised over jiggers, father on the run

A 3 -year- old baby girl is admitted at Dr. Kahwa Health Unit in Kagadi town with severe wounds all over her body parts after being infested with Jiggers.

Gorettee Birungi, a resident of Rugashari in Kagadi district , a mother to the victim, says she had abandoned the baby after her husband Edward Byenkya, 55, attempted to kill her.

“My daughter, Mary Birungi, was infested with jiggers after running away from my husband for fear of being killed. My husband is a perpetual drunkard who used to torture me, battering me daily whenever he would come drunk at night. I came back for the child last week after being called by relatives’’, she said.

Birungi says her and Byenkya have seven children, but adds that they have all run away because of the violence of the father.

Dr. Edward  Kaggwa, who is administering treatment to the child said  the child was admitted while anaemic with jiggers on many of her body parts including buttocks, fingers and thighs . He says since admission on Thursday, her health has improved.

“We have tried our level best to administer treatment to the child and her health condition is improving, save for the wounds on the buttocks, thighs feet and fingers,” he said.

Vianney Njendimana, the LC1 chairman Rugashali village said he had tried to settle the matter with the couple, but Byenkya became stubborn and referred the case to the Police.

He said Byenkya is currently on the run and police have mounted a hunt for him.

Naome Nalwanga, the officer in charge family and child protection unit Kagadi Police Station says investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Jolly Tukamuhabwa a relative to the accused husband said the couple has had a misunderstanding for a long time.
