FMU in trouble over Busiika accident

The accident victims are demanding sh89m in compensation.

The motorsport governing body (FMU) is in trouble following a legal battle instituted against it by the victims of the accident in Busiika during a fundraising Sprint last month.

The accident victims are demanding sh89m in compensation for the damages they accrued.

Through Sebugwawo and company advocates, the victims contend that since they were knocked by a rally car during the Ponsiano Lwakataka Fundraising Sprint last month, they have not got any support from the federation.

During the event, Dr. Godfrey Nsereko, in a Toyota Alex lost control and rammed into fans killing one and leaving nine injured who include Florence Bayiga, Ronald Ssenyonjo, Collins Kakande and the late Najib Kabwama.

"We are to bring legal action against the executive members of the federation for breach of duty, negligence, failure to prevail and deter the event well knowing that there was a non-compliancy to the mandatory requirements." The advocates notice stated.

The lawyers of the victims argue that the event was illegal since it was not indicated on the 2018 FMU calendar and add that the event did not have a legitimate speed lift issued by the Ministry of Works and Transport.

FMU general secretary, Joseph Mwangala acknowledged receipt of the notice.

"It's true we received the notice and it's being handled by our lawyers. At the moment, I cannot comment on anything else since our lawyers are handling the issue," said Mwangala.

Despite FMU saying at a press conference that the victims were discharged, two are still hospitalised at Mulago Hospital.

"Ever since we entered the hospital, no official from FMU has ever visited us. My wife broke her ribs, arms. She has to undergo a number of operations. But up to now, we have not heard from the organisers of the event." Ssenyonjo said.

The accident was the fourth major incident this year
