Kayongo believes the positive response from the international community was partly intended to give back to Uganda being the only serious woodball playing nation in Africa.

Uganda Woodball Federation (UWbF) president Mark Kayongo is excited about hosting the 2019 Beach Woodball World Cup due May 25-31 at Spennah Beach, Entebbe.

The bid was presented by the UWbF general secretary Collins Ssemanda at the International Woodball Federation (IWbF) assembly in Taiwan at the weekend.

It is here that 21 of the 26 national federations voted Uganda over Thailand as the next host of the beach event.

Kayongo believes the positive response from the international community was partly intended to give back to Uganda being the only serious woodball playing nation in Africa.

"We have not hosted an event of such magnitude yet we usually make efforts to participate in most of the international calendar opens and championships," said Kayongo.

He added that the event will help to increase awareness and is also an opportunity for the sport to grow in the country and at the continental level.

"Hosting this big event is an eye opener to local partners, participants and also the international community and we gladly embrace this opportunity," he stated.

In a recap of the last edition Uganda won gold, six silvers and 18 bronze medals in Indonesia.

At the just-concluded Taiwan International Woodball Open championship, Uganda secured a silver medal and three bronze.

Uganda's Watson Mugume nearly won gold but a 5-2 defeat against Taipei's Hou Yi-Cheng landed the 24-year-old a second place finish on
Monday.

He had earlier beaten Wong Ying Wang and Hsieh Tsung in the group stages before thumping Liao Zhen-Liang in the semifinals.
