The regional baseball body is breaking new ground with the inaugural edition of the East Africa Open Club Baseball and Challenge Cup next month in Uganda.

Creation of the regional body was deemed necessary following a series of cross-border games and the ever-growing desire to develop the game in a collective effort.

The first regional competition is expected to unlock huge potential in at least Kenya and Uganda as the two main baseball countries.

Uganda has witnessed some giant leaps over the years with the girls featuring at the World Softball Championships 2016 in Canada.

The Pearls as they are also known have a number of activities with a key focus on next year's Africa qualifier in South Africa.

After recalling baseball and softball back on the Olympics programme, Uganda is targeting an appearance at the 2020 Tokyo game.

Importantly competitions like this particular East Africa championship can always help raise the level of the game.

"Baseball and Softball can grow if the grassroots are emphasized. I strongly believe this is a great opportunity for Kenya and Uganda to cement their relationship as we build towards the same direction" said Dennis Kasozi, president Uganda Baseball and Softball Association.

The event will be played in the U12, U14 and the open category.
