Ahabwe remembers the late Immaculate Kebirungi vividly because her parents died when she was just two years.

As Immaculate Kebirungi, a student in her early 20s, slept in her bedsit, thugs attacked, gang-raped before strangling her to death.

Later, the killers set the house on fire. The incident happened in the wee-hours of Thursday on Neptune Avenue on plot 21 in Mbuya, a Kampala suburb.

Kebirungi was a student at Management Training and Advisory Centre (MTAC) in Nakawa and also worked at the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. The Police authorities said Kebirungi suffered violence and she is likely to have died instantly.

"Strangulation marks could visibly be seen around her neck," Scene of Crime Officers (SOCOs) told New Vision yesterday, as the victim's body was taken to the city mortuary for postmortem. "The killers first tied her legs and arms on the bed, then stuffed a cloth in the mouth before she was strangled to death. Subsequently, the killers set her room on fire, to conceal evidence."

The motive of the gruesome murder is still a subject of Police investigations. However, Kebirungi's neighbours notified the Police about a raging fire. The director of fire and rescue services, Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mugisa, said findings indicate that the victim was first killed before the house was set on fire.

Without divulging details, the Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, said two suspects (names withheld) had been arrested and were helping them with investigations. By press time, SOCOs were still analysing the crime scene.

Security sources said the suspect (male), allegedly a lover of Kebirungi had been arrested as he tried to board a flight at the Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday. Authorities at MTAC told New Vision that Police had not yet notified them about the incident.
