UCU Lady Cardinals were crowned champions of the Women's Independence Day Cup on Tuesday.

The Mukono side defeated top giants Kawempe Muslim 5-4 on penalties after a goalless at Kazo ground.

Goalkeeper Ruth Aturo saved Mariam Nakabugo's spot kick to hand UCU their first ever Independence trophy. UCU who face Isra Soccer Academy away in their opening game of the league, also walked away with a cash prize of sh700,000 and a trophy.

Their striker Hasfa Nassuna won the top scorer accolade after scoring six goals in the competition.

The three day event that involved primary and secondary school plus clubs was organized by Uganda Women's Football Association (UWFA) through backup funding from FUFA.

In the secondary school final, Rebecca Nakato's lonely goal in the 54th minute saw Kawempe Muslim SSS beat Pride College Mpigi 1-0 . The Kampala based school also received cash prize of sh500,000.

Jolly Primary School defeated Bembe Hill Primary School 3-0 to emerge champions in the primary school final.

Jarida Nanyonjo, Hanisha Tamale and Jovena Nagadya each had goal for Jolly primary School.

Chairperson Uganda Women's Football Association (UWFA) Margret Kubingi, FUFA Executive Committee Members Agnes Mugena and Chris Kalibbala and Crested Cranes Coordinator Paul Ssali are some of the officials that attended the final.
