NOTICE ON FILING CUSTOMARY MARRIAGE RETURNS

Article 18 of the Constitution mandates the Government of Uganda to register all maniages that occur in Uganda. The Uganda Registration Services Bureau {URSB) is the Government agency responsible for this mandate and administers all laws relating to marriage. 

Customary Marriage Is one of the recognized forms of marriage in Uganda. It is pertormed according to the traditions or customs of a particular African community and is potentially polygamous. Examples of Customary Marriages in Uganda include Kwanjula for Baganda, Kuhingira for the Banyankole, Nyom metekwaro a'lango for the Langi, Nyom Acholi for the Acholi etc. 

The public is reminded that the Customary Marriage (Registration) Act requires the registration of all customary marriages at the Sub County, Division or Municipality where the marriage ceremony occurred and that a certificate be issued by the sub county chief or Town clerk. Thereafter the sub county chiefs/ town clerks should forward lhe customary marriage returns to URSB for filing and entry onto the marriage register.
