KAMPALA - The first edition of the University Floodlights Basketball last year set quite a huge precedence and certainly no-one can think little of this year's competition that is already up and running.

In a rather pilot scheme in the previous year, things escalated very fast, with big numbers in the stands and some quality games to surpass expectations.

There is already a sense of what might be a very competitive contest as different universities bid for honours.

With more numbers expected to flood the games played under the floodlights, the tournament should continue to grow in significance. It is important to highlight the social side of the games that is synonymous with most night events.

Conversely, the stakes are high as teams look to write their names on the title which brings a prospect of games-of-nerves on the cards.

For this matter, Ndejje will have to do quite a lot if they are to retain the coveted men's championship they won emphatically last year.

And this time round, they mean business.

Their title defence started in rather commanding fashion with a remarkable 71-63 victory over Nkumba.

"We are indeed big at this level of basketball. The team remains motivated as we pursue back-to-back titles" said Walter Obedi, Ndejje's coach.

Meanwhile giants KIU looked to offset a painful previous campaign when they entertained Bugema University at Kansanga on Thursday.

KIU were losers in the final of the inaugural edition and interestingly, it remains to be seen whether they can make amends this year.
