FIGHTING CANCER

KAMPALA - The Uganda Golf Club and the Uganda Women's Cancer Support Organisation (UWCASO) hope to raise at least sh25m from the fundraising golf tournament set to tee off on October 5 at Kitante.

"UWCASO, in partnership with Uganda Golf Club and its members, will join the global effort to increase awareness during the October Breast Cancer Awareness Month," said Rebecca Kiziri, who chairs UWCASO's board.

"The whole month is dedicated to create awareness and we have named it Pink October."

Players can enter to play as individuals by paying sh50,000 while corporate companies can pay sh500,000 for a team of four players.

The tournament was also on last year and the organisers raised up to sh17m, which was used to cater to 1,000 people in five communities, including the refugee community in Kisenyi, Opit and Amoru in northern Uganda.

This year, the theme is ‘Yesterday, today and tomorrow', with the focus on giving attention to cancer patients that were diagnosed, undergoing treatment and those in remission.

Many Ugandans who undergo cancer treatment are reported not to follow up after surgery and are unlikely to make full recovery because they missed important steps in their treatment.

Kiziri emphasised that constant check-ups by those in remission will keep the cancer from returning and frequent check-ups and early diagnosis will save lives.

"This is especially because survival rate after cancer diagnosis in Uganda is at 54%, which means we lose almost half of the cancer patients, which is very unfortunate."

The golf tournament for this cause will be played in the short gun format, where players will tee off at the same time from different holes.
