Mulago specialised women hospital complete

KAMPALA-With effect from Monday, women and newborns in need of specialised services will be able to check into the Mulago Specialised Maternal and Neonatal Hospital for medical attention. But the facility is only expected to handle referral cases from other hospitals. 
 
The Cabinet on Monday resolved that the new facility be open to patients on September 17.
 
“The construction and equipping of Mulago Specialised Maternal and Neonatal Hospital has been completed, and will be open to patients from September 17,” the ICT and national guidance minister, Frank Tumwebaze, said on Tuesday.
 
The hospital, which has been under construction since 2013, is a 400-bed facility. Its construction has been financed by a loan from the Islamic Development Bank.
 
It will offer specialised treatment for high-risk antenatal care, delivery and postnatal services and gynecology services. Others will include surgical, ureteric re-implantation, complex fistula surgeries and vaginal hysterectomies reconstruction after female genital mutilation.

  It will also handle high-risk pregnancies, women suffering from recurrent pregnancy loss, in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), among others.

 
Tumwebaze said the Prime Minister, Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, will lead a government delegation to the hospital tomorrow to gauge its readiness to offer the services for which it has been set up.
 
According to the state minister for health (general duties), Sarah Opendi, this will be the first government  hospital to provide services for fertility care such as in-vitro fertilization (IVF).
