The tournament started on Monday with a practice round.

A third place finish is the realistic target a team of three Uganda ladies set themselves to achieve as they left to compete in the 14th edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy at the Achimota Golf Club in Ghana.

The tournament started on Monday with a practice round. The Ugandan team comprising of Eva Magala, Irene Nakalembe and Martha Babirye were flagged off for the tournament by National Council of Sports' Patrick Okanya on Saturday.

Okanya hailed the ladies for sacrificing to represent the country before handing them NCS's contribution of two air tickets.

He advised them to ensure they take the sport to the grassroots and also formalise their association with the sport governing body NCS by registering and complying with its statutory instrument.

The team will not be short of cheer leaders and company as another 11 lady golfers travelled with the team and will also compete in the Ghana Ladies Open that follow the biennial championship on September 2-4.

Team Manager Gloria Mbaguta, and Uganda Ladies Golf Union committee members Evelyn Asiimwe, Sarah Babirye, Wendy Angudeyo and Lady Captain Anne Abeja and six others all made the trip to Ghana.

"We have practiced a lot and we have been playing well, so it is good to travel when you feel your game is on and it is a pleasure to feel that way and I pray to God that that anchors well with the environment and everything else," Nakalembe said.

"We promise a top-three finish because the last time in Tunisia we played under tough and windy conditions but we have since overgrown some of those and other challenges," Nakalembe who is playing in her third AACT championship stated.

Magala was also hopeful and said the experience they have picked over different tournaments will be key in fulfilling their target while rookie Babirye was looking forward to putting in practice what she had learnt from her experienced team mates over the past two months.

"I have learnt a lot from my experienced team mates; I'm excited to represent the country for the first time and I look forward to play against the best players on the continent," Babirye said.

Uganda finished 7th out of 16 countries the last time out in Tunisia in 2016.

Participating countries include Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Egypt, Gabon, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, ZambiA, Zimbabwe and defending champions South Africa.
