Eleven jailed over city riots

KAMPALA - The City Hall grade one magistrate, Beatrice Kayinza yesterday remanded 11 suspects in connection with the city riots to Luzira prison.

The suspects were picked up from Kamwokya, Nakawa division and charged with unlawful assembly with intent of causing death or physical injuries to persons.

They will be brought back to court on September 6, 2018 for the mention of the case.

The suspects were allegedly demanding for the release of the Kyadondo East MP, Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine.

The relatives of the suspects who had turned up prepared with all the documents to stand surety for the suspects were left stranded as the magistrate hastily ruled to remand the suspects.

"I do not know what is happening. My son was arrested, we appeared in court on Friday, the suspects were remanded and now today it is the same story," Shiek Abdullah Kim Kibirango said.

The suspects included Mohamed Katende aged 18, a welder residing in Nakawa, Adam Agaba (24) a waiter, Ambrose Kibuka (45) a causal labourer, Jackson Mungu (18) a cleaner at the ministry of health, Adam Nduga (26), Tomson Odongo a security guard and Adam Menya a boda-boda cyclist.

Others are Joel Kasana a hawker, Joseph Okwalinga (18) a student at Lugogo Vocational Training Institute, Saad Kibirango a mechanic and George Wafula (17). The suspects also include a student and a juvenile.

The lawyers of the suspects led by Emmanuel Kiyingi in a brief interview with the press said the judicial officer has discretion to say and do whatever they want.

"We were told to appear in court at 10:00am today (Wednesday), we made an effort to keep time but the court convened at 4:00pm. But we shall report back the set date.
