FIFA's Nsekera tips women on sports

KAMPALA - The IOC and FIFA council member, Lydia Nsekera has argued women to join sports administration at club level so that they lay a foundation for breaking through to federation and regional levels.

Nsekera from Burundi made the appeal on Thursday night while addressing Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC) Women in sports commission members at the UOC headquarters in Lugogo.

"We are aware there are challenges to get into sports administration most especially sports regarded to be for men like boxing, football, rugby and motorsport, but you have to join clubs integrate with men and you will break through," Nsekera explained.

"However, when you are joining these sports bodies you must embrace the African culture as a women and respect the other leaders especially men," the CAF vice president in charge women football said.

Nsekera is in the country to officiate as a guest on the Sseninde Cup that ended on Saturday.

The former Burundi football association president explained that she has never played football, but she was just a fan and because of the respect she commanded from both the fans and sports administrators she managed to penetrate into administration.

UOC president William Blick lauded Nsekera for honouring Jean Sseninde's invitation to come to Uganda and inspire Ugandan women.

"You are an inspiration not only to the women but all of us in the continent. We thank Jean for the effort to empower women and as UOC we shall contribute $1000 (Sh3.68m) towards her project," Blick pledged.
