Uganda set for inaugural East Africa Community Games

Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and hosts Burundi will take part in the two-weeks challenge in, Bujumbura.

BUJUMBURA - Uganda will be represented by seven teams at the first edition of the East Africa Community Games scheduled for August 16-29 in Burundi.

While Rwanda and South Sudan will stay out of the contest, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and hosts Burundi will take part in the two-weeks challenge in, Bujumbura.

The four countries will compete in sports desciplines such as Athletics, Football, Handball, Basketball, Netball, Volleyball, Tennis, Rugby, Judo, Karate, Boxing and Taekwondo.

However, Uganda will only be represented in football, volleyball, tennis, boxing in both the men and women's categories while rugby 7's will send only men and netball will be represented by the women's team. The teams set off on Wednesday.

The National Council of sports acting General Secretary, Patrick Ogwel confirmed the teams that will represent the country and promised to involve more teams next year.

"This being the first event, we were shocked by cut in number of participants and teams like handball and basketball have not been represented," said Ogwel.
