The UVF Volleyball League has reached crunch time and the onus is on top teams to stay in good playing condition.

On Sunday, league champions Nemostars pitted against Sport-S and Ndejje Sharks at Uganda Christian University Mukono. A win against both teams would have consolidated their place in the top four and increased their chances of a title defence.

Against Sport-S, they showed glimpses of their brilliance, but succumbed to concentration lapses that saw the match go the distance in five sets earlier in the day.

The long laborious match put more meaning on the one against Ndejje later in the day. Many factors were likely to come into play because the game was played in hot and sweltering conditions at the height of a sunny day.

Hard fight

They fought off a strong Sport-S challenge to win 3-2 (25-23, 25-27, 17-25, 25-17, and 18-17) as they came from 2 sets to 1 to snatch the win.

In the late afternoon, they came up against Ndejje who are desperate for a play-off place. They started off well but their earlier exhaustions against Sport-S proved costly as they lost the match 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-18, and 25-18).

"This season our target was to be in the playoffs and the only way to make it to the playoffs is by beating big teams like Nemo. If we win against a big team it makes us better because Nemo was ahead of us with two points so beating them 3-1 gave us three points and we went ahead of them by one point," Ndejje Coach Johnson Kawenyera said.

The champions finished off the first part of the season on a sour note, but can now take the time to reflect and come with a new point of attack.
