KAMPALA - As the long awaited NSSF KAVC International Volleyball Championship serves off today, hosts KAVC have vowed to win the trophy which has been dominated by foreign teams for the past four years.

So far the biggest volleyball tournament in the country has registered 10 foreign and 18 domestic clubs that will compete in men and women categories.

However, KAVC will rely on Uganda’s two professional players Daudi Okello and Karthbert Malinga who will play alongside local sounding names like Elias Isiagi who has played with Malinga since high school.

Expectations are that Malinga and Isiagi make a good combination that will have to raise Okello who is very good at power attacking.

Emma Elanyu is also expected on the same court to spice up Okello’s back court attacks, never the less Malinga and Okello are reliable players where one will expect 90% good services from them.

The KAVC head coach David Okot said that the team is very fit and will have to serve and concentrate on converting their balls into points.

“We need this trophy and all we need to do is to use our setters very well so that we can convert all balls into points, however am confident that if we work as a team we shall outshine these foreign teams because they have dominated us for long,” Okot said.

The fact that all local teams are not participating in the tourney, the event is expected to feature local teams that are quite composed of good players since each team is open to use league players.

Teams like KCCA, Airforce; Sport-s, Matrix and Western will also stage a very competitive show with their united teams.

Meanwhile Rwanda’s Gisagara and APR who are Genocide and NSSF KAVC champions respectively in the men’s category are the other strong foreign sides local teams have to put at a serious watch.

In the women’s category, Rwanda’s RRA and APR are the other teams that have posed threat to local teams but Nkumba who are the local league and reigning Genocide champions have won their last games against the duo.

The tournament will be on till Sunday where champions will walk away with sh3.7m in the gold category, the runners up (silver) will get sh2m whilst bronze category teams will get sh1m.

On top of the prize money, there are a variety of trophies that will accompany the top performers.
