Sports facilities are a major hindrance to the development of sport in the country and Pirates Rugby Club has taken the steps to own a facility called Kings Park, in a bid to achieve its target of dominating and growing Ugandan rugby.

In May 2016, Pirates unveiled plans to construct the facility at Kakajo in Bweyogerere, but work was delayed due to bureaucracy in approving plans and work did not start until this year, after authorities gave the go ahead.

The facility that sits on six-acre piece of land, will have a two rugby pitches, basketball, volleyball, netball, tennis courts and a swimming pool.

According to club manager, Solomon Ssendigya, the pitch will be ready by October and the Uganda Cup winners want to start their title defence on their home turf.

"We are working hard and planting grass because we target playing our Uganda Cup matches at this venue," Ssendigya stated.

Workers are currently planting Bermuda grass on the main pitch. Bermuda grass grows best when there is a fair amount of rain and it is suitable for warm and drier areas since it has the ability to withstand and survive drought conditions.

"Actually this is not just a Pirates facility but it is a community facility because it is anticipated to greatly impact to the neighboring community in Bweyogerere, especially the youth," Ssendigya added.

He said that besides the partnership with Samson M Iga Estates Ltd, the club intends to have more partners that will help the club set up standard facilities around the country.
