KAMPALA - Vipers kicked off the CECAFA Kagame Club Championship on a low note.

The Venoms came off a goal down to draw 1-1 with Zanzibar's JKU (Jeshi la Kujenga Uchumi Sports Club) in their opening game on Friday evening.

Abdulrahaman Musa was on target for JKU while striker Dan Sserunkuma scored Vipers only goal in that game.

The Venoms will now face defending champions Azam in their next game on Sunday.

The 2017/ 2018 Azam Uganda premier league champions last took part in this tournament in 2011 losing to Tanzanian based Simba SC at the quarter finals.

They are now placed in group A with Azam FC of Tanzania, JKU of Zanzibar as well as Kator FC of South Sudan.

It will be the second time vipers will be playing at this level with also the CAF Champions League awaiting them next season.

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia are placed in Group B with Rayon Sports (Rwanda), Lydia Ludic (Burundi) and Ports (Djibouti) Group C that many have termed as the "group of death" involves Tanzanian rivals Simba SC and Singida alongside Rwanda's APR and Dekedaha FC from Somali.

The event that was last held in 2015 saw Azam beat Gor Mahia in the final 2-0. The top two teams in each group and best two losers qualify for the quarterfinal.
