EC sets date for by-election to replace Abiriga

About sh500m has been earmarked for the Arua Municipality by-election.

KAMPALA - The Electoral Commission (EC) has set August 15 as the date for the Arua Municipality by-election as the race to replace former MP Ibrahim Abiriga, heats up.

Abiriga and his bodyguard were on June 8 assassinated en route to his home in Matugga, Wakiso district.

According to Justice Simon Byabakama Mugenyi, the EC chairperson, about sh500m has been earmarked for the by-election.

Byabakama told journalists on Thursday morning during a press conference at the EC headquarters in Kampala that next week, a stakeholders meeting will be held to harmonise the various sticky issues that may arise ahead of the by-election.

The stakeholders meeting will take place at Arua district headquarters on July 6.

"Nomination of candidates shall be conducted for a period of two days, from July 19-20," Byabakama said.

"The commission has also banned any fundraising activities in Arua Municipality to allow a levelled-ground for candidates in the race" he added.

Over 20 candidates have expressed interest in the by-election, including former Terego County MP, Kassiano Wadri, who wants to contest on the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) ticket.

Byabakama has called upon all aspiring candidates and voters to comply with the law.
