RUKUNGIRI - The woman MP for Rukungiri district, Betty Muzamira has commended Catholic priests for their dynamic involvement in education and development.

She also commended the clerics for their firm stand against social injustices in society.

"Catholic priests have always been reputable for their holistic development programmes.

"On top of their evangelistic work, they also champion sustainable projects in the arenas of education, development and relief, which have transformed the lives of many Ugandans,"Muzamira said.

Muzamira made the remarks during the annual re-union function of Kigezi-Kampala Residents Association (KKRA) at Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology, Nakawa on Sunday.

Muzamira later thanked members of KKRA for promoting unity and solidarity among the affiliate people of greater Kigezi.

She further thanked them for contributing to the development of the churches in their respective rural areas.

Earlier during mass, the parish-priest of Rwamagaya Catholic parish (in Kabale Diocese), Fr Christopher Niwahereza condemned people who persecute religious leaders on account of their political pronouncements.

"As religious leaders, we must be seen to be the voice of the voiceless. Unfortunately, when we come out and speak against the social ills in the country, we are attacked and asked to shut up and concentrate on baptizing Christians. This has made our work of Evangelisation very difficult. In any case, we cannot afford to be silent amidst injustices. If we do so, we shall become irrelevant."

The Chairman of Kigezi-Kampala Residents Association (KKRA), VanansioBagateireyo, encouraged members of the association to make more financial donations towards the completion of Rwoya Sub-parish Church.  About sh20m was raised in cash and pledges during the fundraising function for the Church.

The function climaxed with a friendly soccer match between KKRA and Rwoya Urban. The match ended 3-1 in favour of Rwoya.Fr Prosper Tumuheise, the assistant parish-priest of Rwamagaya also graced the function.
