ILLEGAL RECRUITMENT COMPANIES AND INDIVIDUALS FUELLING HUMAN TRAFFICKING IN UGANDA

Mandate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs

Under the provisions of Section 21 of the Prevention of Trafficking in persons (PTIP) Act 2009, a Coordination Office for Prevention of trafficking in Persons was set up at the Ministry of Internal Affairs Headquarters to be responsible for coordination, monitoring and over-seeing the Implementation of the Act. This Office facilitates day to day operational partnership between several stakeholder Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) which have mandates that relates to human trafficking issues, including prevention of the crime, protection & support of victims and prosecution of the culprits. The key MDAs are Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Education and Sports, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Justice & Constitutional Affairs, Uganda Police Force, Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Directorate of Citizenship & Immigration Control, the National Intelligence Agencies and some Civil Society Organizations.

Through the operational partnership, the Ministry of Internal Affairs compiles data on the crime of trafficking in persons. This article is intended to inform the public about one of the key features of the crime that has been noted and to guide the public on how to avoid becoming a victim of human trafficking.
