Nakabo shuns Genocide tourney for Olympiad qualifier

Nakabo took a tough decision yesterday to forgo a tournament that would earn her 2200 rating points in Kigali, Rwanda.

KIGALI - Promising player, Peninah Nakabo has opted to withdraw her participation from the Genocide Memorial Chess Tournament starting today in a bid to compete for a slot on the local women's team ahead of Chess Olympiad.
 
The 25-year-old who needs 419 points to become the fourth Woman Fide Master (WFM) in the country.
 
Nakabo took a tough decision yesterday to forgo a tournament that would earn her 2200 rating points in Kigali, Rwanda.
 
"The chess Olympiad is a big event and it's one of the tournaments I have dreamt of taking part in.
 
"I will miss battling for points in Kigali but I know if I make it to the world stage I would have attained a much bigger goal," Nakabo said.
 
However, Nakabo will need to out-compete senior players like Ivy Amoko, Gorretti Angolikin, Christine Namaganda, Phiona Mutesi and Shakira Ampaire so as to be among the five players on the women's team.
 
Others in the final qualifiers include Rita Nsubuga, Milly Takali, Joyce Kabegano, Maria Nakanyike, Safinah Mugide, Joan Nakimuli, Esther Nannozi and Theresa Kembabazi.
 
Meanwhile, local players who departed yesterday to compete at the annual Genocide tournament include;IM Elijah Emojong, Vianney Mukalazi, Haruna Nsubuga, Bob Bibasa, Rajab Kamoga.
 
Farouq Fauza, Simon Gonza, Mathias Ssonko, Gerald Wadada, Jalagatha Mugisha, Ezekiel Masiko, Jonah Byaruhanga, Joshua Katumba, Isaac Mudangi, Emmanuel Musasizi, Kevin Ndagire, Victoria Nakirya and Emmanuel Mwaka.
 
The Genocide tournament has attracted players from host Rwanda, Uganda, England, Kenya, south Sudan and Burundi.
