ROAD ACCIDENT

KIBOGA- Three people died on spot and two others sustained injuries following a bus accident that occurred on the Kampala-Hoima highway on Monday night.

The Link Bus registration number UAM 492B with over 60 passengers on board was travelling from Kampala to Hoima district when it was hit by a speeding trailer carrying a wheel loader moving in the opposite direction.

The Wamala region Police spokesperson, Norbert Ochom, in a phone interview said the accident occurred at around 10:30pm at Kiyamba in Bukomero sub-county in Kiboga district.

He identified one of the deceased as Byamungu Kibiika, a Congolese refugee and a resident of Makindye, a Kampala suburb.

He said the injured Dick Musimenta, 20, a resident of Kabaale in Buseruka sub-county, Hoima district and Chris Nuwaninda, 22, a resident of Kikonda in Kyankwanzi district were by press time receiving treatment at Kiboga hospital.

Ochom added that Police is hunting for the driver of the Link Bus, Karoli Wamala, 50, who is currently on the run.

He said the trailer, which is yet to be identified, took off immediately after the accident, adding that they are also co-ordinating with traffic along that route to impound it.

He could not tell the cause of the accident because it was at night.

An eyewitness has told New Vision that the wheel loader from the trailer hit the bus, damaging the left hand side of the bus where all the deceased were seated.

However, other unconfirmed reports indicate that the driver of the trailer hit the bus after he failed to negotiate a corner at the said spot.

Yahaya Kugonza, the manager of Link Bus Hoima terminal, confirmed the accident, but said it could have been bad driving on the side of the trailer driver.
