Over 5,000 Ugandans living in the United Kingdom are expected to attend the inaugural Uganda Annual Sports Day on July 21 at New Arm Leisure Center in Barking.

The one-day event is aimed at uniting the Ugandan community in England, according to Mohammed Katumba the CEO Big Daddy International, the organisers of the event.

Katumba says unlike other gatherings based on tribe and religion, this is going to be different uniting all Ugandans through sports, so that they can address some of the challenges that are affecting them.

The gala will involve games in football against Ex-internationals such as Yusuf Gitta, Ronnie Vubya, John Latigo among others who live in the UK. Other games lined up include Mweso, Drafts, snooker, volleyball and netball in the event that is set to become annual.

"We shall also have a crafts shop with items from all tribes of Uganda and local food prepared from all corners of Uganda. We shall also have motivation speakers and get inspiring stories from the likes of netballer Peace Proscovia," Katumba said.

He said the event is also aimed at helping Ugandan students in the UK on career guidance because the majority that study there end up settling for small paying jobs because of lack of career guidance.

He said the event will also address why not so many Ugandans have failed to break into the top UK football teams yet Nigerians, Ghananians and Cameroonians have made it through.

"It pains me not see Ugandans take up big jobs in hospitals, media and other job opportunities because of lack of guidance from a tender age, so we want to address that," Katumba noted.

He said they will also address issues regarding investments at home so that some of the Ugandans abroad stop being cheated of their hard earned cash by relatives and unscrupulous people who receive their money in Uganda.

"We want to start working with law firms in Uganda to start helping the Ugandans in investment and acquiring land that has no encumbrances and investing in real estate because life in the UK is becoming too expensive," Katumba noted.
