Jinja- Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga is slated to preside over the International Midwives Day celebrations to be held tomorrow in Jinja.

According to Nathan Kitakule, the chairperson of the organising committee, said the celebrations will be held at Jinja SSS.

He said they will begin with a symposium on how best midwives can perform and improve on service delivery in their sector.

He said it will be under the theme: ‘Midwives leading with quality'.

Kitakule, who is also the principal assistant secretary of the district, said the celebrations will have midwives hold exhibitions on taking care and feeding of babies, premature ones and also pregnant mothers.

He added that on the due day for the celebrations, they will have a display of premature babies born weighing only 500 grams.

He said after the celebrations they expect more people to enroll into the sector due to the high demand of their services.

"We expect more people to join the field of midwifery which is so demanding. It has a short fall and yet we don't want either mothers, premature and well borne babies to suffer without proper medical attention," he said.

He said Jinja district alone has 140 qualified and registered number of midwives while the national is at 11,473.
