As everyone runs downtown to look for tiles to give their floors a smooth and colourful finish, some sit back and wonder what the fuss is all about.

Tiles, tiles, tiles! Surely, there must be more, that one can do to a floor besides tiles. Yet escaping the tile fever does seem daunting.

Hillary Kyomuhendo, an interior designer at Elite Stones and Designs in Ntinda, says there are other options to explore, such as terrazzo and clay tiles.

With terrazzo, he says you need stones and cement (both ordinary and white cement). "The terrazzo does not fade over time and it is easy to clean," he says.

When working with terrazzo, Kyomuhendo says the labour will cost about sh 80, 000 per square metre and in this case, it will include the materials as well.

Besides terrazzo are clay or quarry tiles, which look lovely, rustic and classic. Kyomuhendo explains that they are basically small red bricks, commonly called Kajjansi, that are split into two to make two tiles.
