The driver lost control of the bus, apparently as he attempted to avoid a bodaboda rider.

ACCIDENT

At least five people are feared dead after a Kamwenge district-bound bus carrying refugees overturned on Thursday.

Several others were injured and later rushed to nearby health facilities.

The actual death toll is not known yet.

The driver lost control of the vehicle, reportedly as he tried to avoid a bodaboda rider in Kyirimiire, about one mile to Ibanda.

The bus was headed for Rwamwanja refugee settlement.

Police and several people converged at the scene of the accident, where the bus lay tipped over in the middle of the road.

While the man behing the wheel is said to have lost control of the bus, the actual cause of the accident has to be established, according to the DPC of the area SP Kibende Rogers.

"So far, the cause of the accident is being alleged to be a bodaboda man, who was recklessly riding and then the bus driver was trying to save him," he said.

"As of now, the number of those who are dead is not yet ascertained. That of those badly off is also not. What we are doing is evacuating people to the nearby hospital.

"At a later time, we shall be able to establish those who are dead and those who are injured."
