Luzira maximum security prison for women has hosted a fashion show for its inmates.

With fellow inmates cheering them on, incarcerated “models” strutted their stuff on an improvised catwalk inside the prison's premises.

Stella Nabunya the Officer in Charge of Luzira Women’s Prison said they organised the fashion show to help raise the women’s self-esteem.

“Prison’s department allots each of its inmates 40 weekly hours of productive skill building with a special focus on helping inmates transition from criminality to civility in a purposeful and fulfilling manner,” Nabunya said.

She adds that the design and tailoring is a rehabilitative project meant to grant inmates with skills they may need after serving their sentences.

“We prepare inmates for the outside world through equipping them with skills to enable them create employment upon discharge rather than seek for jobs,” Nabunya said.

“We realised that if you give an inmate something positive to do, if you teach a skill, if you let them participate in a program that results in some self-reflection, then you're going to have a safer prison for both inmates and staff,” Nabunya observed.

Nabunya said they want inmates to perceive prison as a place of healing than incarceration
