The Government has directed the Education Service Commission to kick-off the search for a new principal of Makerere University Business School.

In letter to the chairperson of the Education Service Commission, Asuman Lukwago, the Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, says the process of appointment of the next MUBS principal should commence before May 28, in order to avoid a vacuum at the country's leading business training institute.

Prof. Wasswa Balunywa's contract as MUBs principal will expire on May 28. To avoid a vacuum, the education minister says in her April 11 letter to Lukwago that the job should be advertised.

"The purpose of this letter is, therefore, is to inform you that the permanent secretary of the education ministry will make a formal submission on the job specifications, duties and age requirement for the post of principal of MUBS," Mrs Museveni said.

The education minister cites Section 83 of the University and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001, which gives powers to the Education Service Commission to recruit principals of public tertiary institutions.

When contacted, Balunywa, who was appointed principal of MUBS in 2003, confirmed that his contract expires in May. He, however, declined to comment on whether he will seek renewal or move on after 15 years at the helm of the business institution.

"At this moment, I would rather not comment on that matter," he said.
