"I agree with Prince William that we must do more to conserve wildlife and that we also need a critical mass of youth who are creators of wealth with progressive and analytical mindsets."

LONDON - President Yoweri Museveni says he agrees with Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge, that more efforts are needed in wildlife conservation.

The two met at Buckingham Palace in London during an audience on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

"I agree with Prince William that we must do more to conserve wildlife," Museveni later tweeted.

Prince William, who is second in the line of succession to the British throne, has previously voiced his sentiments on wildlife conservation.

In 2016, he told an international wildlife summit in Hanoi, Vietnman that poachers had become more sophisticated and more brutal.

He said despite global efforts to tackle poaching, the crisis is thriving.

But he maintained at the time that bringing an end to the trade was a possibility - that "it is only a test of will".

President Museveni flew to the UK on Wednesday to attend the biennial Commonwealth Summit.

His plane touched down at the Luton Private Airport and he was received by Col Chris Sharwood-Smith, the queen's representative.

The Ugandan statesman was accompanied by his daughter, Patience Rwabwogo.

During their meeting at Buckingham Palace, Museveni and William also talked about the role of youths in development. They said a "critical" mass of youth with "progressive and analytical midnsets" are needed.

Uganda hosted the 20th Commonwealth summit in 2007 - from November 23 to 25.

This time round, the summit in London proper takes place on Thursday and Friday, following three days of forums and events to lay the ground work.

According to AFP, Britain hopes to use the week to promote its post-Brexit trade agenda as it prepares to quit the European Union next March.

"We have the opportunity to re-invigorate our Commonwealth partnerships and usher in a new era," Liam Fox, Britain's trade minister, told attendees at a summit event Monday.

Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth II, who is the head of the Commonwealth, appointed her grandson Prince Harry, 33, as her Commonwealth youth ambassador.

Analysis

London is going for the hard sell, hosting a reception aimed at showcasing British exports, from food and drink to the English Premier League football trophy.

It has pounced on the organisation's analysis showing the advantages of trade between Commonwealth countries due to their common language and legal systems.

Intra-Commonwealth trade is expected to increase by at least 17 percent to around $700 billion by 2020, according to the 2018 Commonwealth Trade Review.

But overall the Commonwealth accounts for just a tenth of Britain's trade, compared to the EU which accounts for nearly half.

In terms of goods and services trade in 2016, Britain did more business with 15 countries -- nine of them in the EU -- before its biggest Commonwealth trade partners Canada and India.
