Religious leaders don't need protection - Jonah Lwanga

KAMPALA - The Metropolitan Archbishop of the Orthodox Church, His Eminence Jonah Lwanga, has said religious leaders do not need protection from security operatives, because they are protected by God.

He was responding to a question from a journalist during a press briefing held at St. Nicholas Orthodox church Namungoona on Friday ahead of their Easter celebrations on Sunday.

"As an individual, I do not think religious leaders need protection from security operatives. We are protected by God, and without God's protection, all other forms of protection are incompetent," he said. 

As the orthodox celebrate their Easter this Sunday, Lwanga has asked Ugandans to repent their sins and return to God. He said this is the only way crimes such as corruption, embezzlement of public funds and killings in the country will reduce.

He called on President Yoweri Museveni, his family, cultural and religious leaders, and all Ugandans to appreciate more the purpose of the incarnation of the divinity into Christ, the objectives of his teachings, his crucifixion to the cross and his resurrection.

Many Orthodox churches base their Easter date on the Julian calendar, which often differs from the Gregorian calendar used by the Roman Catholic Church, and that is why they celebrate their Easter Sunday days after the roman Catholic church.
