BY-ELECTION

The Electoral Commission has set May 31 for Rukungiri Woman MP by election. The seat was declared vacant on March 22 by the Court of Appeal following a petition by Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) contender, Betty Bamukwasa Muzanira.

After losing the February 2016 parliamentary election for Rukungiri Woman MP, Muzanira challenged the victory of National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, Winnie Matsiko, over bribery of voters.

Addressing journalists on Thursday at the Electoral Commission (EC) headquarters, the deputy EC chief, Hajjat Aisha Lubega Basajjanaku said: "Polling for by-election of MP shall take place on Thursday, May 31, at all polling stations in Rukungiri district."

"All candidates are urged to observe law and order during this exercise and to conduct their campaign meetings in accordance with the harmonized programme. Hate language will not be tolerates at all," Lubega added.

The by-election, which will cost EC sh850m, is expected to be politically hot.

Lubega said a stakeholders meeting will be conducted on April 19 at Rukungiri Municipal Council Hall to consult voters and harmonise the warring factions ahead of the polls.

There are 280 polling stations in Rukungiri district and 171, 497 eligible voters.

However, the EC boss said the display of the voters' register to update the register will be conducted from April 30 to May 9.
