MAYUGE - Three people were killed and two injured when lightning struck during a heavy downpour in Bukasero village in Bukatube sub-county, Mayuge district on Sunday.

The police identified the victims as Muniru Dembele, 41, Rashid Mutebe, 27 and Ronald Okware 16, all residents of Bukasero village. Survivors are Kadiri Kadabo, 17, and Matia Mugalya, 27. They were rushed to Pancrass medical centre in Mayuge town council.

Moses Kato, the Bukasero village LC1 chairperson, said five people were struck by lightning as they were taking shelter at Ohudi Annex Primary School in Bukasero.

Yowana Musana, a resident, said the men had been cutting sugarcane from a nearby cane plantation and had taken shelter in the school following a heavy downpour.

The residents asked the Government to install lightning conductors in schools, hospitals and other public places to save lives.
