KABALE - Women in the Kigezi region are still giving birth from their respective homes despite the availability of health facilities, according to the Uganda Demographic and Health Survey 2016.

George Kawese, a senior statistician from Uganda National Bureau of statistics (UBOS) said despite the presence of health facilities at the parish and sub-county levels, most women still prefer giving birth from their homes or using traditional attendants.

He made the remarks while providing statistics of the findings from the survey for Kigezi region during a workshop at White Horse Inn Hotel in Kabale district recently.

Dr Asaph Byamugisha, a medical officer with the Rukungiri district local government said the practice of women giving birth from their homes has a lot of risks, which mothers should avoid.

"There is a greater chance of maternal mortality for such mothers compared to those who give birth from health centres," he said.

Byamugisha called for more sensitisation of women to enable them deliver from hospitals.

"We believe that this trend can be dropped if our women were sensitised about the benefits of delivering from health centres," he said.
