MAYUGE - The Mayuge Police have arrested a 40-year- old woman over stabbing her two-year-old step child.

Dianah Namutunzi, the Mayuge district Police commander, identified the suspect as Asiina Namuganza, a resident of Bugadde B in Kityerera sub-county, who is married to Swaibu Abawaya.

Namutunzi said Namuganza stabbed Hidha Kantono on Sunday evening at around 6:00pm while she was on her mother's back.

The child's mother, Betty Doroka, had reportedly gone to ask money from their husband, who was at Namuganza's home.

Kantono was reportedly sick and Doroka wanted money to take the child for treatment.

On arrival, a fight ensued between the women, resulting in the stabbing of the child on the head.

Namutunzi said their mother-in-law, who would have helped in the situation, was overpowered by the Namuganza.

According to Doroka, when she arrived at her mother-in-law's home, which is a stone-throw from Namuganza's, she called out to her husband, but this did not go well with co-wife, who pounced on her.

Doroka was reportedly pregnant and was nestling the child on her back.

Namutunzi said Namuganza had been charged with murder and would be taken to courts of law.
