KAMPALA - A Kampala minister-bodaboda cyclists meeting on Saturday ended in futility after the cyclists challenged Beti Kamya to involve all stakeholders in meetings to resolve matters of bodaboda riders.

The 100 cyclists, who were representing about the 19 groups of bodaboda riders in Kampala, said matters concerning them cannot be discussed in the absence of the Lord Mayor and Kampala Capital City Authority officials, who manage them.

Kamya was only flanked by Daniel Kazibwe aka Ragga Dee, who is an Operation Wealth Creation official, to address the cyclists.

The meeting, which was held at the Office of the President, was intended to update the bodaboda riders on the resolution to register all the cyclists and have them given permits in order to weed out criminals.

During the meeting, the riders raised concern of politicians interfering in their work for their selfish interests.

They cited Kazibwe whom they alleged was hiding under the guise of creating savings and credit and co-operative societies to which they should subscribe, saying they were already saving under their different associations.

Earlier, the meeting had come to a standstill when the cyclists demanded that Rashid Kawawa, who they alleged was a member of bodboda 2010 disguising under Industrial bodaboda Nakawa. However, it resumed after the ‘Noah' was thrown out.

Kamya raised concern over the increasing deaths, which are executed by assailants travelling on bodabodas. She also said other bodabodas were causing accidents which result in death, with the most recent being the one that claimed veteran journalist Ssezi Teddy Cheeya on Thursday.

Kamya also decried the indiscipline among riders who use pavements while riding and disobeying the traffic regulations.

The meeting resolved to reschedule the meeting after mobilising leaders of particular stages in Kampala, rather than representatives of groups. In the next meeting, Kamya promised to have all stakeholders brought on board.
