Uganda has intensified its preparations for the World Half Marathon and Africa Cross-country.

A total of 25 athletes have entered camp in Kapchorwa for the two events slated for this month.

The African meet is scheduled for March 17 in Algeria, while the world 21 kilometre event will take place a week later in Valencia, Spain.

The world half marathon team has Felix Chemonges, Fred Musobo, Alex Mutai and Moses Kurong, Doreen Chesang, Emily Chebet, Viola Chemos and Juliet Chekwel.

Former world cross country silver medalist Thomas Ayeko leads Uganda’s quest for medals in Algeria.

Uganda’s Phillip Kipyeko won silver at the last edition in Yaounde, Cameroon.

Kipyeko who recently finished second in the national championship is back on the team.

The African meet had a one off edition in 1985 in Nairobi, Kenya. Following an announcement by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) that the IAAF World Cross Country Championships would change to a biennial, the Confederation of African Athletics stated that the 2011 African Cross Country Championships would be held in Cape Town, South Africa, marking a relaunch of the competition.

The IAAF World Half Marathon Championships on the other hand is an annual competition.

Algeria bound team U-20 Women (6km); Sarah Chelangat, Peruth Chemutai, Belinda Chemutai, Rispa Chebet.

U-20 men (8km); Victor Kiplangat, Denis Cherotich, Hosea Kiplangat, Mathew Chepkurui.

Senior women (10km); Mercyline Chelangat, Stella Chesang, Janat Chemusto, Linet Chebet.

Senior men (10km); Thomas Ayeko, Phillip Kipyeko, Nelson Wakana, Mande Bushendich and Sam Cherop.
